Frequently Asked Questions
This first session will be different from a typical therapy session. It will be 75 minutes, and we’ll begin by ensuring we are on the same page regarding informed consent (e.g., confidentiality and ethical practice) and logistics (e.g., scheduling and cancellations). Then we’ll move on to gathering information about a broad range of topics. I’ll ask more questions about various topics and fewer follow-up questions than in a usual therapy session. I’ll be interested in your current thoughts and feelings, and we can go at the pace that feels comfortable for you.
Regular sessions are 50-55 minutes long, typically held weekly or biweekly. The American Psychological Association reported that the average duration of therapy ranges from 12-20 weeks, depending on the client and the issues. Three-fourths of people who attended weekly therapy for 6 months reported significant improvement in their lives. Sometimes, folks prefer to remain in therapy for a year or more; after resolving what they first came for, they realize they have more work to do. The duration of therapy is always the client’s choice.
